Darkness of Light by Stacey Marie Brown

#1 Darkness Of Light (Darkness Series Book 1) by Stacey Marie Brown [Kindle Edition]

DARKNESS OF LIGHT is a Mature YA(16+)/New Adult Paranormal Romance.

**Warning: The Darkness Series is not YA, but a NA Series.

Freak. Witch. Crazy. Schizo.

Ember Brycin has been called them all. She’s always known she’s different. No one has ever called her normal, even under the best circumstances. Bizarre and inexplicable things continually happen to her, and having two different colored eyes, strange hair, and an unusual tattoo only contributes to the gossip about her.

When the latest school explosion lands her in a facility for troubled teens, she meets Eli Dragen, who’s hot as hell and darkly mysterious. Their connection is full of passion, danger, and secrets. Secrets that will not only change her life, but what and who she is—leading her down a path she never imagined possible.

Between Light and Dark, Ember finds a world where truth and knowledge are power and no one can be trusted. But her survival depends on finding out the truth about herself. In her pursuit, she is forced between love and destiny and good and evil, even when the differences between them aren’t always clear. At worst, she will incite a war that could destroy both worlds. At best, she will not only lose her heart but her life and everyone she loves. Once the truth is out, however, there will be no going back. And she’ll definitely wish she could.

Cover:

I absolutely love the artwork on this cover! It’s colourful,  with mysterious dark purples and blues for the top half of the cover, surrounded by rock in the background. The bottom half has a yellowy greeny colour, the sort of colour a cat’s eye would have. If you really analyse the cover, like I do since I like analysing stuff, if you notice the work ‘Darkness’ it’s all in block capitals and it’s on a plaque which you would show off like an award or something else prominent. The “plaque” also has vines swirling around it, which gives me the impression that whatever this “darkness” is, it will trap you – the swirl has curves in it which shows a specific art. But which? Moreover, the words ‘of Light’ are in a flowery kind of typeface and glows a little, which shows that it’s for good and the good is nice. But if you notice in the back of ‘of Light' there’s a forest and there’s a pathway to whatever is glowing in the distance – if you look really hard, it looks like a grand beginnings of a castle. But I'm not too sure. If you notice the overall look of the cover, which do you see more: dark colours/ shadows or light colours/ glowing? Continuing on the subject of ‘light’ and ‘dark’ and also the colours, notice that the girl’s face, Ember’s, has one dark eye and one light. But once having read the book, looks can be deceiving …

Book review:

As soon as I started reading the book and was a few pages into it, I knew I was going to like it. It was straight into the action department! As some of you know I love my action! It’s the Masquerade ball at Ember Brycin’s school and she’s out with her two best friends: Ryan and Kennedy. Ember lost a bet to Ryan, and her consequence is to go to the ball – but even though she’s not looking forward to it, she suddenly sees her crush, Ben. But she doesn't get to talk to him long because Kallie Parson comes in and ruins it.   It wouldn't be secondary school without a catfight/ bully now would it?

They get into a little heated argument and as soon as Kallie starts b**ching about Ember’s friends,  Ember gets seriously angry – and nobody wants to get our lovely Ember angry. Especially when bulbs start to burst and mini fires start from the resulting lightning. As you can guess, everyone is in hysterics and run out of the gym door. When Ember calms, she finds that she’s on the floor of the gym on her own – then she hears the fire engines.

As she’s being checked by the paramedics, Sherriff Weiss and Principal Mitchell interrogate her.

Soon after, she walks around the school to cool off and suddenly – out of nowhere – a pair of blue eyes comes into view after whispering her name. Blue Eyes’ features are distorted and very hard to see in the dark. Even with that, Ember thinks she knows him from somewhere, that he seems rather familiar – but she thinks this is all a hallucination and quickly dismisses it and plays along. However, something he says sends chills her spine, also mine. ‘You are starting to become harder to hide from her.’ Eerie? I sort of trust Blue Eyes because of that message. Ember is confused and scared, but as they talk, I noticed that Blue Eyes said ‘Cinaed’. What is ‘cinaed’? I’ve read this sort of writing before in some books and I think it was Gaelic, I wasn’t sure. I know what you are all thinking: Why not Google translate it? Well, no. I’m not going to do that because it’s going to ruin the fun of the book isn’t it? It would totally ruin it for me and wouldn’t have kept the mysteriousness of it all.

Later on, after that freakish moment of hallucinating Blue Eyes, Ember goes home to take a nice, long, relaxing bath. She checks her bandages from the electrical explosion from school and finds that she’s completely healed – where she should have nowhere nearly healed since the cuts were deep.

Ember freaks – I would too!

That is sooo not normal! (Or if you read a lot of this genre, you’re used to it).
In Chapter 5, while in the police station (busted!), Ember sits down with a cup of coffee. She looks over to the guy nearest to her with a magazine and wearing a hoody. For some unknown reason to her, her skin starts to prickle – signs of her powers coming to rise to protect her – and feels that there’s a threat nearby. As she keeps on looking at him, he starts to fidget. All she wants to know is what his face look like, but with his hood up – she can’t. Suddenly a policeman comes over to this guy and takes off his cuffs from the arms rest. Noticing that they both know each other, the receptionist tells him that he knows what to do.

  Odd …

The guy turns his head ever so slightly towards Ember. We get to see part of a strong chin, part of his lips which looked like they were pulled up to a smirk – cocky bastard – and …

  Piercing green eyes.

  Which takes our breaths away.

  H.O.T.!

Once Mark, Ember’s step dad, had finished his conversation with Sherriff Weiss and Principal Mitchell about Ember going to Silverwood for “troubled children”, they both head to his truck to go home. Before Ember climbs into the truck, she feels as if she’s being watched. By a black Harley motorbike, stands the guy from the police station with his ‘pair of electric green eyes looked back into [hers]’and noticed that ‘the way his eyes glowed reminded [her] of[ her] own.’ She got an evil feeling and shivered as ‘fear filled [her] knowing he knew [her] face.’

The next day, after seeing Green Eyes, Chapter 7 leads us to see Ember out in the trees by her house, hoping to clear her mind of these hallucinations. Her peace of mind doesn't stay for long as suddenly the wind picks up. Whispering her name, a muscular man stands before her in ‘black leather pants and a black fitted shirt, which hugged every muscle to perfection’ on his body.

Oh. My. Days! Muscular men and leather trouser and fitted shirt absolutely DOES it for me! I'm in! I just want to take him away and make him mine!

OK … might have gone too far there … Ho hum.

His looks don’t stop there ladies and gents, it is also partnered with ‘black hair and alluring smile.’ Well, what would we do without an ‘alluring smile’ hey? Every book has one! And guess what?

  He has a name!

  Torin!

Odd name and it originates from (yes, I did some research) Gaelic and means ‘chief’ and may have roots meaning ‘thunder’. Hmm, rather interesting.

Silverwood is where we are next, and is where strange and weird things start to occur…

With Ember going to Silverwood with a community service punishment in tow, the head mistress of the school, Mrs Sanchez, introduces Mark and Ember to Silverwood and explains the schedule and things like that. When Ember goes to her first Outdoor session, 2-4, she suddenly feels very hot and looks behind her.

There’s a guy coming towards her with a slight limp in his step. They lock eyes. ‘Two deep scars’, ‘dishevelled, rough bad boy’, ‘animalistic quality’ and ‘his eyes shone unnervingly bright’. Is there more I need to say? Guess what? It’s the guy from the police station! Green Eyes!

But jealousy turns Ember’s mood as a girl walks towards him and she notices ‘something unreal about her’ too. With that, she has ‘beautiful, long, red hair, light blue eyes, and porcelain skin’. Is it me, or am I thinking of Princess Merida from Brave?

princess merida photo: Brave Princess Merida BRAVE-PRINCESSMERIDA-2012.jpg

These two are in their earlier 20s and they do have names. Green Eyes is called Eli Dragen! Oh my days, talk about a sexy name!  Eli Dragen is a bad boy! Just to prepare you, so you all don’t faint because he is soo sexy.

The lovely Princess Merida’s name is Samantha (Sam) Walker. Now, since this is a supernatural book, I thought I was being clever and try to suss their powers out. So I thought that, since Eli’s surname Dragen sounds and looks a lot like “dragon”, his power was something like the element of fire, or he stemmed from The Dragon or something like that. With Sam’s surname, Walker, I thought it seemed that she would have the Earth element since “walk” is within her surname and likes to walk through forests.

But soon later in the book, we start to hate these people (read the book for the reason why).

  WHY? WHY? WHY? WHY? WHY?

Not fair! *sulks and crosses arms like a petulant child*.

Later, Ember meets up with Kennedy and Ryan at a café to hang out.

  It happens again.

Our favourite person of the year, Kallie Parson, comes over to their table and starts to bully them. Ember gets very, very angry and suddenly all the lights burst and the boiler explodes. But the weird thing is, is that Ember is completely calm and likes the destruction that surrounds her …

  Is this good or bad?

After that fiasco and a few pages later, Sherriff Weiss, whom is after Ember and Eli, decides to add two more days of community service to Ember’s sentence and to Eli’s from a previous crime.

But the catch is, they have work together to teach a fun ropes course to troubled teens. As you can probably guess, they hate it and, since Eli is an instructor at Silverwood, he tries to talk Mrs Sanchez out of it. But no, this old lady isn’t head mistress for nothing, and sticks firmly to her plan. She even goes to say, ‘And I have a feeling you and Eli will work really well together.’

  Ha! Now that’s a joke!

Eli + Ember => work well together?

  More like:

Eli + Ember => sexual tension + arguments + hot and cold attitude

  Now that’s more like it.

This is the part I was acting totally like a teenager, which I am. The ropes lesson for these two was very hot and steamy! Not X rated or anything. After all, this is 16+ book, but I do admit that I squealed like a school girl and giggled. So what? Sue me for having this reaction, I am after all a hopeless romantic.

After the steamy ropes lesson, Kennedy and Ryan pick up the sexually frustrated 18 year old. They both look and gawk at Eli, who is casually leaning on his black Harley. My favourite line of Ryan’s is that he says ‘Now there’s a Happy Meal I’d like to order.’ OMDs!! I laughed so much! As Ryan continues to spout these types of remark, I fall in love with him.

I don’t blame them for gawking at sexy Dragen.

  But something strange happens …

Kennedy just looks at Eli blankly and mumbles, ‘He’s dangerous and very dark. Death surrounds him…’. Well, I thought that was a bit weird and thought I would file that incident away in my detective hat for later – having a feeling it would come up again.

Ryan and Kennedy quiz Ember about the lovely Dragen and that Ryan would defiantly have him. However, once Ember mentions his name, they both go quite. I was a bit confused at this, so was Ember, but Ryan and Kennedy explained that our lovely Dragen is part of an MC (motorbike club), called The RODS, aka The Riders of Darkness. A very dangerous group according to Ryan, since his father works at the police station. He says that they are into some nasty habits.

Hmmm … more secrets from Mr Dragen.

After a hectic day of their first ropes course lesson to 10-12 year olds, as Eli and Ember are about to leave Silverwood, a strange person comes into view at the gates. ‘He smiled at [her], but something in his eyes told [her] he was anything but friendly.’  Well, this strange man, Lorcan, calls Eli ‘brother’. So we have a good brother and a bad brother. How interesting …

Being a nice gentleman, he introduces himself to Ember by saying that ‘it’s a pleasure to finally meet you.’ Not creepy at all with a smile like that mate. As both brothers start to have a “civilised” conversation, it quickly grows heated, as Eli starts to get superior. He suddenly spits out, ‘Are you willing to give it all up? Get your head on straight, brother.’ Ember obviously freaks out and after the day that’s she’s had, she’s about to blow. She gets really annoyed that Eli won’t answer her questions so she starts to walk off. Eli gets on his motorbike and comes after her since she won’t stop and shouts ‘Ciach ort!’.

We've seen that somewhere, haven’t we? Talon …

As the book progresses, more events take place. I don’t want to get into too much detail since some people would probably like to read the book and I don’t want to spoil the fun.

Later on, Ember starts to get fevers, which is unheard of since she doesn’t get ill, and gets more terrifying nightmares. With all this power, she starts to destroy more things. As she continues to cause havoc, the darkness in her is very dominant against the light, which is a cause for concern.

Sam isn’t just a jealous beach, she tries to kill Ember.

At a campfire party, Eli and Ember have an argument which doesn’t end very well, with Ember running for her life when a creature appears and shreds her calves like mincemeat.

  Where’s Eli?

He’s got distracted by hunting someone that was disturbed in the woods where they were.

  But it’s a trap.

In the next chapter, Ember is in the infirmary and while she is unconscious – since losing a lot of blood – Eli makes a blood transfusion. This is forbidden.

Then, Ember is told that the worlds of Fae, of Celtic and Irish fairy tale stories of Tuatha Dé Danann, are actually all true.

  Welcome to the Otherworld.

Ember is an “abomination” in everyone’s eyes and the group of people: Eli, Cole, Jared, Owen and Cooper run tests on her blood since her and Eli’s blood are mixed. As they run the tests, they all tell Ember of the Otherworld. But before they could get into the really good stuff, she is kidnapped and is put in a cell made of iron – which is allergic to the Fay.

She has been kidnapped by the Queen of the Seelie Court. Yet again, our lovely gentleman shows himself and tells Ember of who she really is and what he and his brother are.

  Ember is a Dae. ½ Fay + ½ Demon => Dae.

Lorcan and Eli = Death Dwellers. They are very cat like and incredibly dangerous.

The Queen releases Ember. She wants Ember to do something horrific. Ember obviously refuses, like anyone would, but the Queen has a surprise and brings out her father, Mark. Then she starts beating him up. Ember shouts out for her to stop,. The Queen does and Ember agrees to do whatever the Queen wants her to do.

  This means destroying Seattle.

Since Ember’s powers are just beginning to appear, the Queen wants the best effect on the city. She provokes Ember’s anger, since her powers work best with strong emotions, and Ember screams as the city before her reduces to rubble.

Ember is horrified and is sick with herself for doing such a task, but she was forced. With sudden determination, she tries to run away from the Queen’s grasp. But before she’s able to get away, she pauses at Mark, who is barely conscious but his eyes tell her to go. Torin appears and promises to protect Mark.

  Then Ember runs.

I absolutely LOVED this book! It has everything that I wanted in a book. Adventure, romance, infuriating hot bad boy, suffering, supernaturalism and humour.

  LOVE LOVE LOVE!

The book on Kindle is 77p and is approximately 301 pages.

I would give it 5/5! I know, I’m not that hard to please, but this book is AMAZING and would so totally recommend this book!

Touched by Corrine Jackson

#1 Touched (A Sense Thieves Novel) by Corrine Jackson
[Kindle Edition]

Remy O’Malley heals people with touch—but every injury she cures becomes her own. Living in a household with an abusive stepfather, she has healed untold numbers of broken bones, burns, and bruises. And then one night her stepfather goes too far.

Being sent to live with her estranged father offers a clean start and she is eager to take it. Enter Asher Blackwell. Once a Protector of Healers, Asher sacrificed his senses to become immortal. Only by killing a Healer can a Protector recover their human senses. Falling in love is against the rules between these two enemies. Because Remy has the power to make Protectors human again, and when they find out, they’ll be coming for her—if Asher doesn’t kill her first.

This is Book One in the Touched trilogy.

Book cover

Lovely book cover to start off the trilogy! I like the darkness that features throughout most of the cover – which hints dark times ahead – however, there’s the light coming from the top right giving me the impression that something good is going to come out of this book. Or that God is looking down on the characters and giving them a sense of peace – linking with that, He could be watching and giving them a little hand with all of the glitter sparkling against the sun’s rays. Another interpretation could be that there’s hope in the book and the glitter comes as a good twist in the plot.
I like the rose in, I presume, the main characters hands – Remy O’Malley. If you look closely at the edges of the rose, it’s starting to blacken … I think that there is a romance in this book (clearly stated in the blurb), but that love is tainted with darkness. That the darkness is only beginning to spread on the rose, as the relationship has only just blossomed, and will continue to spread as the book and trilogy continue to go on – spreading like a disease. A disease that keeps tearing the relationship apart.
  Or maybe … it’s a forbidden love?

My excitement

Finally the whole trilogy is out! This book came out in November 2012 and as soon as I read the blurb and sample, from Amazon, I knew I was going to love it. I looked it up on Jackson’s blog to see how many books this series was going to feature, as you have read – three.
  Cue happy dance …

happy dance photo: Happy Dance HappyDance.gif

So I had to be a patient girl and set a task for myself to wait and until all three books were out.
Let me tell you, it wasn’t easy.
But I kept myself busy with other books in the meantime – yummy!

Book review

  Let the book review begin.

At first we are introduced to a fight with the man of the house – Dean. Remy steps into the apartment and instantly knows that pain will be bestowed on her as Dean, her stepfather, is completely drunk and her mother, Anna, is lying on the floor unconscious. Also that the first lines of the book are ‘Okay, this is going to hurt like hell’ provide a bit of a clue! I was a bit apprehensive when Remy provoked the intoxicated Dean to come after her – giving her mother time to recuperate and keeping the focus off her. I understood why – to protect Anna – but I felt fearful for her knowing that whatever Dean was going to dish out, she would be in a lot of pain. I noticed, as Remy continued to goad Dean, that she never referred to her mother as Mum, but called her by name. I thought that this was a bit odd, but later found out that ‘… Anna loved Dean more than anything. More than [Remy].’ I found that heart breaking and I was a disappointed in Anna, because she’s supposed to protect her child and not let monsters like him get anywhere near them. I was in disbelief that after what Remy had done to Dean, Anna still scolded her fighting against him.

But Remy’s used to the pain and still heals her mother after a fight with her step-father. Remy has an ability to help wounded or diseased people and when she heals them, their wounds or diseases transfer to her, so that she has whatever they have. But luckily, with enough energy, Remy heals her wounds on her own.

When Dean and Remy are fighting, Remy’s in a choke hold and suddenly – out of nowhere – there’s a flash of red light that comes from her to Dean and makes him collapse … Strange …

Later, we see Remy in the hospital with her mother by her bedside and Remy heals her and in return Anna tells her to behave next time otherwise Dean will do this again – but Remy has heard it all before and doesn’t care – she’s just tired that her mother keeps Dean around.

  Suddenly Remy’s father walks in.

She doesn’t particularly like him very much.

  Why? I hear you ask?

Well, Remy resents her father – even bordering on hatred – because he wasn’t been around to help her when she needed him while he was playing his own happy families. But this time, Ben isn’t playing the weakling he was all those years ago. And I feel proud of him when he says very firmly to Remy, ‘You’re coming to live with me.’

  HALLEJUAH!!!

Thank the Lord that she’s going to have a break from all the chaos that surrounds her mother!

Now … this is when the fun starts!

Cheshire cat grin photo: A Cheshire Cat ACheshireCat-1.gif

After some arguing and screaming, we see Remy on the beach, looking into the ocean and analysing if living with Ben is the correct choice or not. But, in the corner of her eye, she notices a camera pointing in her direction.

Ladies and gents, this is where we are introduced to our yummy and sexy Asher Blackwell.

Remy studies the fine specimen as he snaps away on his camera and takes in that he has ‘deep-chocolate brown hair fell in long waves to his neck.’ Is it me or is it that he sounds like a beach boy? *sighs dreamily*

‘Sharp planes and angles defined his tanned face.’ Oh dear … I loooooooove when a boy has sharp facial features – screams masculinity! It’s suddenly getting hot in here … I absolutely agree with Remy that she describes the fine young male as ‘striking’. What is not to like with a tan, hair and face like that hey? Please correct me if I’m wrong.

‘Full, sensual lips and a square, shadowed jaw completed the rugged picture ...’ No need to elaborate on this part people. Just see previous point.

‘… marred by a two-inch white scar …’ *pants* ‘… that slashed through one eyebrow to the top of one high cheekbone.’ Oh. My. Days. Amigos. OK, OK, forget about the beach boy look, he is most definitely, a bad boy.

BAD BOY ALERT  BAD BOY ALERT  BAD BOY ALERT  BAD BOY ALERT  BAD BOY ALERT

  Houston, we have a problem.

‘And his eyes … their dark green colour that reminded [Remy] of the woods that hugged the marine.’ I love the woods, it gives me the thought of freedom, rebellion and a sense of danger – never knowing what’s lurking in the shadows behind the trees. You could think of Asher’s chocolate brown hair representing the trees in the woods and you don’t really know what’s behind trees, do you? Since when Asher’s hair is long, it’s like a cover for him to hide behind, so no-one can get close to him and know his dark secrets.

  Fitting, don’t you think?

As Asher continues taking pictures, Remy gets angry and paranoid that he’s taking photos of her – pitying her. She marches over to this mysterious boy and tries to take the camera away from him. But what do all cocky bad boys do?

  They laugh.

He laughs at her attempt to capture the camera, but she unexpectedly falls. Asher shows his concern and offers to help, but being a brave and fearless heroine, Remy ignores it and gets up – gritting through the pain slashing though her ribs. Remy is sceptical of the young boy and decides to walk away, but it wouldn’t be fun without him following her, would it? Asher grabs her arm and looks at her. Remy takes the opportunity to scan him, to see if he’s got any injuries or illness and also to use his energy to heal herself.

  Ash’s eyes widen.

Tell- tale signs show from this that:
  1. As Remy is scanning Asher, it doesn’t stop – which normally it does.
  2. Energy is being transferred from Asher to Remy and that nobody should really feel it.
  3. There’s a sudden blast of green light that flashes between to two of them.

  Who is this Asher Blackwell?

And what is he up to?

suspicious photo: suspicious4_zps1e3e1e0a.gif

After introductions to the rest of her father’s family, she retreats to her room and thinks about the boy from the beach and gets warning bells, ‘bells sounding in [her] head clamouring “danger, danger” when [she] thought of the future.’

The next day, Remy is woken by her half-sister, Lucy. Lucy asks a few questions, seeing how she’s feeling and so on, but Remy tends to give short answers – finding the bubbly girl weird.

Well, I can’t say anything in the matter, since I am weird and bubbly. But in Remy’s perspective, yes, Lucy is weird.

She helps Remy get dressed to go to the Underground with her friends. Since Remy doesn’t have an awful lot of clothes – or nice ones in fact – Lucy gives her one of her shirts. Remy is taken aback by the gesture and thinks that ‘nobody was this nice’ and says sincerely, ‘Thank you, Lucy, for the shirt. And the welcome.

The Underground is where our beautiful Asher Blackwell is at the time, but Remy is caught looking at the boy and is told by Lucy to stay away from him and his family because he is the sort of guy that breaks your heart.

Well, aren’t they all like that?

Lucy enforces this by saying that, ‘Dad would have a freakin’ heart attack … it’s our job to worry Dad, not kill him’. So, we assume that Daddy dearest does not like certain heart throbs, does he?

However, what Jackson has very sneakily puts in throughout the book is that Remy keeps on picking up that her father has arrhythmia – where the heartbeat beats irregularly.

A few pages later, we meet the lovely and hotter-than-Ash, Gabe Blackwell, Ash’s older brother. Please don’t get me wrong, to those who are fuming that I imply that Gabe Blackwell is hotter than Ash. But that is only in the looks department.  Not the personality department.

Still at the Underground, we see that ‘[seeing] his features up close, [she] was captivated, though [her] appreciative perusal was impersonal’. Even though she wasn’t really interested in him, such a strong attraction towards him made me think that nobody could have that effect on anybody. Admittedly this is fiction, but it’s what the personality counts in this case.

When I read this part, I thought, ‘the hottest guys have to be total prats in a family don’t they?’ (Yes, some can be nice but, in a book like this, someone has to be unlikeable).

Let’s continue to admire the ‘hotter-than-Ash Gabe Blackwell’, ‘almost too beautiful to be real, his appearance left [her] cold’. Well, this where we are not super fans of Gabriel. But writing ‘almost too beautiful to be real’ gives us the feeling that this fine, young man has a supernatural feel towards Remy. But, since you’ve read the blurb before reading this review, you obviously know that he is supernatural.

  Problem solved.

As our heroine continues to study Gabe, ‘for some inexplicable reason he reminded [her] of a predatory shark who’d sensed blood and circled in for the kill’. This gave me some thoughts of what Remy feels towards Gabriel Blackwell.
  1. That she seems intimidated by him
  2. That he is:
       - Fierce
       - Dangerous
       - Taunting
       - Sneaky
3. The most important part is that since Jackson/ Remy gave Gabe used the shark metaphor, it tells me that he hunts and kills his prey.

  *Sings ‘foreshadowing’*

The Blackwell family, Asher, Gabriel and Charlotte (Lottie), go to the same school as Remy does, surprise, surprise. Since Asher is in some of Remy’s classes and hangs out during lunch – they spend a lot of time with one another.
It’s all very hot and cold to me.

One minute they don’t like each other, the next they do but, when Remy’s walls go down, Ash throws it back in her face and vice versa. Then, when they come to a par and like each other, our lovely Gabriel comes along and stirs the cauldron for trouble. It goes on like this for nearly the whole book – which is rather tiresome to be honest.

WHY CAN’T THEY JUST BE HAPPY FOR ONCE!!! GAH!!

The action is nicely spaced out throughout the book so I don’t get bored, which is nice –those who’ve read the previous review know that I love my ‘healthy’ dose of action.

In Chapter 9, tragedy strikes. But before they pass away, they pass on some rather nice information to Remy to stew on. It wouldn’t be paranormal romance save-the-world book if the main character doesn’t get confused at stupid riddles or partial sayings, would it?

Now in this type of genre of book, there is going to be some history that will need to be covered for the main character as well as the readers.

But sadly this is where I get bored with information and the MASSIVE paragraphs. So I normally take it in my own stride and eventually get past the MASSIVE paragraphs, which can take a while depending how long it goes on for. But this is me, I like action stuff and the ‘OMG’ scenes.

The breakdown of what everyone is:
Remy is a Healer – which is self-explanatory.
Asher and his family are Protectors.
  Basically they have:
   - irregular heartbeats
   - cannot touch or taste
   - they are immortal

That’s all I’m givin’ ya folks.

Later on in Chapter 9, they go to Anna’s apartment to get some things, but while Ben is out, Dean the-crazy-dude comes along …

After that fiasco has passed, Remy gets the iPod out that she retrieved from her mother’s home and listens to it which brings up some interesting things …

What could it be? *Ponders, while stroking imaginary beard*

But in the last third of the book is where weird things start to take place.
  1. Someone rats out to the other Protectors that Remy is a Healer
  2. Strange phone calls to the house are being made
  3. Remy’s feeling watched
  4. Dean comes along to say hello
  5. Epilogue – bit of a shocker to some people, but if you’ve read a lot of books in this genre – like I have – it isn’t rocket science to know what’s coming.

There some clues (one or two) in this review I have left for you to dissect if you want to investigate, but if you would like to be surprised on what occurs, then please read it.

I would totally recommend this book to anyone who likes fast paced, supernatural lovey dovey (but not too much) and save-the-world books.

This book on Kindle is £1.08 and is approximately 304 pages.

  I would give 4/5 stars

Full Moon Rising: Riley Jenson Guardian Series by Keri Arthur

Full Moon Rising: Riley Jenson Guardian Series Book1 written by Keri Arthur [Kindle Edition]

A rare hybrid of vampire and werewolf, Riley Jenson and her twin brother, Rhoan, work for Melbourne’s Directorate of Other Races, an organization created to police the supernatural races–and protect humans from their depredations. While Rhoan is an exalted guardian, a.k.a. assassin, Riley is merely an office worker–until her brother goes missing on one of his missions. The timing couldn’t be worse. More werewolf than vampire, Riley is vulnerable to the moon heat, the weeklong period before the full moon, when her need to mate becomes all-consuming …

Luckily Riley has two willing partners to satisfy her every need. But she will have to control her urges if she’s going to find her brother….Easier said than done as the city pulses with frenzied desire, and Riley is confronted with a very powerful–and delectably naked–vamp who raises her temperature like never before.

In matters carnal, Riley has met her match. But in matters criminal, she must follow her instincts not only to find her brother but to stop an unholy harvest. For someone is doing some shifty cloning in an attempt to produce the ultimate warrior–by tapping into the genome of nonhumans like Rhoan. Now Riley knows just how dangerous the world is for her kind–and just how much it needs her.

Before I read  the book

Let me just start off – what a beautifully fierce cover! I just love the green swirling magically around the page and Riley Jenson – the main character. The connotation of green symbolises fertility, the improvement of vision and healing. However, dark green shows the colour of money. All of these things are certainly featured in the book – a little visual foreshadowing here. The light by her head, highlighting her fiery red hair seems symbolic in the way that the red of her hair matches the ferocity of her personality which burns brightly by her protectiveness of those around her – especially her twin brother, Rhoan.

When I first saw the blurb, I was a bit hesitant because the main character was ‘a rare hybrid of vampire and werewolf’. Personally, I don’t really like vampires as main character because it spoils the fun in the book. When you think of vampires, you think of blood sucking, sleeping during the day, stakes through the heart – these sort of things. This can be rather predictable. It just annoys me I suppose. Sorry Twilight fans – no offence. J

This is my personal opinion – so don’t start a mob and try to kill me… please.

Another reason why I hesitated at reading this book is that it seemed to focus on saving Riley’s brother and nothing much else. Yes, it does talk about the ‘moon heat’ and the ‘shifty cloning’, but it seems all about saving the brother. I understand that saving Rhoan kicks off the series of events – it just seemed a bit naff…

After all of this pre-judgment, I went to my well trusted Web site, Goodreads, and read reviews of the book there. I saw a lot of mixed feelings about this one. Some people gave it one or two stars and others four or five. I read their comments and thought I would give it a go and see if my own thoughts matched any of theirs.

I next went onto Amazon and looked up the Kindle version – and stopped.

 £5.99. What the hell!

Oh my days! Why is it sooo bloody expensive?! I was shocked it cost, basically, £6 for a 360 page book. Yes, that may seem a lot of pages to some people, but for me, I read books like that within two days, sometimes one. I could read a book that has more pages for half the price.

I was appalled at the cost, the physical book was only £7.99 – only a £2 difference. So I started to read the Amazon reviews. On the whole they said that there was a lot of action and that the romance in this book is featured quite a bit, but it didn’t get in the way of the plot. I saw some good reviews, on an average there were four out of five stars. I felt a bit reassured by this but, looking at the price, I asked myself “Is this book really worth it?” Since there are nine books in the series, and books two to nine each cost £5.49, I calculated the cost of the whole nine-book  series would set me back a total of £49.91 (that’s $87.75 at the time of writing).

   £50.

That’s most definitely a lot of money for only nine books but, bearing in mind that this series is very popular and that there are over 300 pages per book – I decided to give the book a go. After reading the sample, I bought it.

Book review

I really liked the beginning of the book which went straight into the action –I love books that do this. It easily captures my attention, filling up my addiction of action and gore in a matter of pages.

The first character we are introduced to is Gautier – whom I hated immediately. He’s just a creepy bastard ‘with a capital B’. Also what repulsed me about him was that ‘his voice, like his dark hair, was smooth and oily’ and made me imagine him being extremely smelly, like Arthur has written, and that he’s very sly and can easily slip through your fingers when you have just caught him. This is then followed by the first action scene we see our fierce heroine dive into and victoriously comes out alive, but with a person’s life gone.

After the physically draining fight, we are then introduced to Jack, Riley’s boss. Riley calls Jack to tell him what transpired at the warehouse opposite the human and nonhumans club, Vinnie’s. After explaining to Jack her weird feeling, worried that her twin brother is in trouble, Riley sets off home and we meet the very handsome, very muddy and quite naked Quinn – standing outside Riley’s door, in the middle of the night no less. Odd, huh?

When Quinn was introduced, I was a bit suspicious of him at first because he was a vampire and since we’ve just seen Riley’s distrust in them, it set me off on edge. I was more suspicious when he was polite. Politeness is an easy way of people worming into your life with ill intentions. But as the book continued with his character, I started to like him a bit, but still suspicious since Arthur doesn’t really tell us much about the 100,000 year old vampire – who is polite.

The sad thing is that Riley doesn’t have many friends because of what she is, half vampire and half werewolf. She considers as her friends her boss, Jack, and guardian, Kelly. They are the only two people that accept Riley – even if they don’t know about her mixed heritage. This shows how harsh the world can be when people are prejudiced towards you and don’t accept who you really are.

What I like about this book is the humour of the banter between Riley, Rhoan, Quinn, Jack and Kelly. I smirked and chuckled at the barbs they threw at each other. It’s subtle which I find refreshing.

We next see the ‘tall and powerfully built, with chiselled features and dark golden hair[ed]’ Talon at the Blue Moon club where were-creatures are celebrating sex because of the ‘moon fever’. The description Arthur provides captures me instantly and makes me melt into a puddle of goo. Is it me, or is it hot in here?  I liked Talon, not just for his appearance, but his little nickname for Riley: ‘little wolf’ – which made me even hotter for him. Crickey, I love boys when they give you cute nicknames. OK, OK, yes I am a hopelessly romantic kind of girl – and most importantly, I am a girl. We have hormones. We just die when a guy does something so hot – like calls someone a cute nickname. I also liked him because of his “Alpha” attitude towards Riley (pun intended) but then the book continued …  I hated him.

Admittedly, it was lust at first sight for me, but come on! Chapters 4 and 7!!! Blimey, what on earth is wrong with him!! You just don’t do that! When Talon did these things, I got really suspicious of him. In Chapter 7, Talon and Riley are in the hot tub at Talon’s place and are having a specific conversation. Riley was refusing to do what Talon “requested”, more like demanded, and he was getting annoyed. Talon said that ‘there are ways to ensure gender’. I was getting my fedora hat and trench coat on and thought that he was behind the cloning business. What confirmed my suspicions further was that Talon said his company was an ‘empire’ and that he looked through Riley’s medical record without her consent. He said that he ‘put a lot of thought’ in what he “asked” Riley and that he doesn’t ‘intend to give it up until [he] get[s] what [he] want[s]’. After Riley refuses for the billionth time, Talon says something that really gave me the chills, ‘We’ll see, little wolf. We’ll see.’ Now I’m thinking ‘little wolf’ isn’t as hot anymore … more like disturbing.

  On with the review.
Then a lot of action takes place, which I don’t want to get into since people might want to read this before reading the book.

Just after getting Rholan, something happens …  to whom – you’ll have to find out. ;)

Then, shorty after that fiasco, the gang sits down, with a nice juicy steak made by Liander and sets up a plan. At this point – I got seriously bored.

So I found another two books, that I found out that were just released, and read them within two days. What does that tell you? Once I read both books, I went back to this one – and I’m glad that I did. There was a bit more action, which was a nice ending to the first book of a nine part series. The action definitely satisfied my craving and there was a showdown between Talon and Riley. I thought the fighting between them was a bit short-lived though. However, I did finish the book within a matter of hours.

Throughout the book I never really connected to Quinn on a massive scale. This might be what Arthur is after, but I feel uneasy about it. I don’t get hot and bothered like Riley does. I know he’s going to stay around, it’s just that it’s missing something – I don’t like that emptiness of him. Yes, the mysteriousness might draw people in, but he just seems like an OK character to me.
Now, since I’ve finished the book, I’m in two minds about reading the second.

On the one hand, I want to continue and see whether Riley gets her wolf soul mate and has her dream family, and see more action. On the other hand, I don’t want to continue because I don’t like the plot of the cloning business. It just seems a bit naff to be honest.  Hmm …

  What do you think?

  If I don’t continue, it’ll save me £43.92. That’s got to be a plus …
